A fingerprint scanner is a biometric device that captures the unique pattern of ridges and valleys on a person’s fingertip. It converts that into a digital template, which is used for authentication (logging into a system), identification (verifying identity), or access control. Because fingerprints are hard to fake and can’t be “forgotten” like passwords, these scanners provide a strong layer of security. Many are compact, USB-powered, and certified for secure applications (e.g., government / financial).

  • Sensor Type: Can be optical (uses light) or capacitive / semiconductor (uses electric field) to read fingerprint pattern.

  • Resolution / DPI: Higher DPI (e.g., 500?DPI) gives more accurate fingerprint image capture.

  • Interface / Connectivity: Commonly USB (USB 2.0), or sometimes USB?C.

  • Security / Crypto: Some biometric scanners have hardware cryptography (RSA, AES) to secure fingerprint templates.

  • Durability / Ruggedness: Scratch-resistant sensor surface; and protection like IP54 for dust/splash resistance.

  • Operating Systems Supported: Many support Windows, Android, Linux.

  • Standards / Certification: Some are certified (e.g., STQC, UIDAI L1) for use in secure / government systems.
