A glass cutter is a hand tool used to score (make a controlled scratch) on the surface of glass, so that the glass can be broken cleanly along that line. The cutter wheel (often tungsten carbide) makes a clean groove; then light tapping / using notches helps you snap the glass in two. Many cutters have an oil reservoir or self-lubricating system to reduce friction and make scoring smoother.  These are commonly used in windows, stained glass work, crafts, and mirror cutting.

  • Cutting Wheel: Usually made of tungsten-carbide or hardened steel; very hard to score glass cleanly.

  • Lubrication / Oil System: Many glass cutters have an oil reservoir / felt washer so that oil keeps the wheel smooth and helps guide the break.

  • Rotating / Replaceable Head: Some cutters have a head that rotates or can be replaced when worn.

  • Ergonomic Handle: Metal or wooden handle with non-slip grip for control.

  • Scoring Depth Control: The wheel design + pressure helps control how deep you score the glass.

  • Breaking / Snapping Notch: Many cutters have notches / grooves to help snap the scored glass along the line.

  • Durability: Use of hard materials + oil system increases the life of the cutter.

  • Versatility: Depending on model — can cut float glass, stained glass, mirrors, sometimes tiles.
